Accountability

First a tiny apology - I forgot about this follow-up. I mentioned in an earlier post, "A candidate for promotion", GSM's promotions budget of £30,000 for 2007. I thought you might be interested to see the 2007 budget giving the totals for all categories of income and expenditure. All the figures are net of VAT.

Approx £18,000 for equipment hire. Does that include the trolleys from Wickes?

market supervisor£79002 .... Barmy's wages, no wonder he can afford to employ minors.

£79002? I'd bump the 'market supervisor's' unofficial salary up to £100,000- with the additional wages he skims off the market. Let's open up a blog on unofficial receipts and lack there of...

Flippin heck. Are we really saying he takes back handers? I've heard that but never seen it.

£30,000 for promotions. That has to be a joke right?

This kind of puts the last (and future)rent rise in perspective, doesn't it?
We got the boo hoo hoo about how costs were rising and how rents haven't been increased since year dot. What GSM really meant was:
Give us some more, don't argue as we can use the current inflationary climate to bully you!
Fact is, our rents are the same as Borough Market, but without the huge footfall.

I, for one, would like to see the breakdown of that £30,000 spent on 'promotions'.
And, of course, the official job description of the 'Market Supervisor' should be make for interesting read..

So hang on a minute. These are budget figures right? They are not actual figures. I wonder what their actual figures look like.

Call me cynical, but wouldn't some companies want to "inflate" their costs in order to bring down the profit column?

Also I don't know if anyone else has noticed but there is no rent mentioned in this budget - service charges yes - but rent, no. So I can only assume GSM and Greenwich Hospital have some kind of profit share agreement.

This too would be another reason to potentially inflate projected costs so as to show any profit margins are reduced, thus meaning GSM would have to pay out less to Greenwich Hospital.

It would be very interesting to see the true figures to see how they compare.

This is an extract from guardian.co.uk (http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2006/feb/25/workandcareers.moneysupplement):

....Greenwich market manager Barney Crockford says: "For many [market traders], it's not about the money but a liberating way of doing something on your own terms"

So next time you pay your rent (and perhaps not bringing enough home), you know you are paying for Barney's salary and he is telling the world you don't mind...

Hi Whistler - I think the quote from Barny in the Guardian above should have its own special section - what do you think. I'd love to leave a comment on the fact he doesn't think it's about the money. I mean, he must think none of us have bills to pay - stupid.

Barny should have been more careful in choosing his words. He probably didn't mean to be so insulting, but after all he is a manager in a very responsible position and should have thought it out more.
If he really does think that the traders are some kind of gentleman farmers or trust fund day dreamers, well then, he needs replacing.

Haha! Firstly, to 'the Last Stand of the 100'- that was very funny! I'm sure we must be friends on the market- even if we are anonymous here..
On a serious note, Barny's comment in the Guardian is incredibly patronising- most of us are actually hard-working people- with a mind to run a business, Maybe in the 60s we were hippies- spreading free love, not concerned about money and smoking dope.
If I were earning 80 grand for bossing people around- I'd probably be of the same opinion...
And I wouldn't really describe 'doing the market' as on 'our' own terms. If all traders could just ship up there, be allocated quickly and nicely, without hassle- it might be.
There are a WHOLE LOAD OF NONSENSICAL TERMS we are faced with- DAILY!
