A bit of a barney
It has been reported that raised voices were heard in the market twice this weekend. I'm told the manager and his assistant were having a "spirited" discussion and that yesterday the manager was engaged in a similarly amplified conference with some of the market porters. Any information?

It isn't hard to find out what was going on. As usual Barney was airing his opinions in full ear shot of all and sundry. Discrete he isn't. The thing with the porters was about the way there are always loads of porters on quiet days but never enough at busy times. It was so bad this Sunday that even Ben was portering. The lads were getting pissed of with Barney's attitude. The usual I'm right you're wrong and if you don't like it, tough. Don't know what the other thing was. Bet some one overheard it though.
...Barny Crockford... I thought it was Barmy Crockford?
...or is it Basil Crockford at Fawlty Markets?
According to my informants, the Barny/Ben row was down to Barny'a announcement that he would be taking over the Thursday and Friday markets, run perfectly well up to now by Ben alone. Not surprisingly Ben was less than pleased at having his market days screwed up and made as miserable as the weekends. Barny was absent from his weekend slot quite a bit earlier this year and I've been told how much better things were done by Ben.
BRING BACK BEN!
- when barney was approached by the porters it was about the fact that they have been messed around. one week theres 4 guys on then the next week 2 and there expected to do the same work in the same time for the same PAY! No warnings just on the day!
orginally barney said, and i quote "its nothing to do with me!" then sortly rephrased it and talked his way around it.... Which he is sooo good at doing! "If they want consistancy then they should get on the contract!"Basically he just wafled on about a load of s**t untill they just couldn't say anything back...
AND WHATS THIS ABOUT DREAD BEING SUSPENDED WITH PAY UNTILL FURTHER NOTICE FOR GROSE MISSCONDUCT O SOMTHING!!!!
Oh dear, oh dear... I've discovered this blog tonight and I can't believe the level of people's stupidity and boredom.
You seem to attack Barney so much and forget the times when you had to pay your way in with lovely Bill. Lovely manager Bill... The numbers of bottles of his favourite alkohol you had to give him to get that stall you wanted- remember that? And his barely moving out of the office large posture- how great the market was at the time, wasn't?
Get a life people, get out and experience your own life!
this is about peoples livelihoods, traders and market staff are both been mismanaged
BRING BACK BEN AND ALEX!!!!!!!!
Ben is such a lovely, great guy who will allways help someone in need. The market without Ben is like Cake with no egg. You can try using a "substitute" but its just not as good! He will be missed dearly if he nay returns and market life wont be the same without him.
I sense a real struggle through the next month or so for the market 'Staff' as alot of the workload that would normally be covered by either Alex or Ben ( Like Beining in the market ALL the day. (now some are too quick too leave or hide away in the office with the door locked.) Things WILL be forgotten, problems WILL occur! The somewhat 'jolly' atmosphere of the market is flipside and general moral is down! Its having effect!!!
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS LOVELY PLACE!!!
We wholeheartedly agree with the above comment regarding Ben, he is a very lovely, helpful, compassionate guy who would help anyone if he could. We don't know the reason why we have not seen him for a few weeks but whatever it is I hope he realises that he has a lot of support in the Market due to his integrity over the years.
I didn't know where to leave this comment but just wanted to say.... this weekend has been horrible. Alex has been suspended. Ben is nowhere to be seen. A trader has been asked to leave the market by the management. I feel totally worn out and tired. The atmosphere is awful. I feel like we are working under a dictatorship in a different country. Yet nobody seems to be listening to us. WHAT MORE DO WE HAVE TO DO GREENWICH HOSPITAL BEFORE YOU HEAR US!!!!!!!!!!!!!It's quite unbelievable.
What do you mean by awful atmosphere? I don't know who you speak to and what about, but my weekend was nicer than expected- plenty of people about, business going ok, the staff was perfectly nice and even the sun was out all day. But if I tried to waist my whole weekend on watching the managers and running around looking for problems- it would be awful actually. So darling- calm down and get over yourself. I don't think anyone is forcing you to trade there- try somewhere else and than we can talk about dictatorship.
Lisa
Aah Lisa, Lisa, Lisa .. I will pass your "happy" and "sunny" comments on to Ben, Alex and the trader who was asked to leave. I am sure they will appreciate it.
Who, can any one say, has been asked to leave, and why?
John, leather wallet and bag guy, designer maker and grade one casual who makes stuff while sitting at stall. Was at market for years, left for a while, then came back. Seems to fit GSM's alleged policy.
Crime - who knows.
Did complain on Saturday to management about a lower graded seller of similar product being given a prime pitch rather than him.
Come Sunday, he was allocated a pitch last, then later given a letter kicking him out. I didn't get a look, but one of the reasons was daring to argue with management.
Real reason? Probably his complaint left him exposed for use as an example to all the traders posting here.
GSM message - don't speak out, don't rock the boat or we'll f*ck you.
So does anyone know what's happened to Ben?
Options to explain Ben's disappearance.
Abducted by aliens
Joined a travelling circus
Gone on to bigger and better things
Let's hope it's option three, he deserves it.
Miss you Ben.
Hey Lisa. What's your problem? Why won't you let someone say how they feel without putting your boot in? They had a bad day and said so without giving their peers a hard time. You had a nice day. I'm happy for you. You could have just said so without feeling the need to stick it to the previous trader. Why are you so bitter?
I'm sure if Ben and Alex had been running the market on Sunday, the car park would've been open before traders formed a queue out onto Church Street, the porters would've been able to get to the storage, the traders wouldn't have sat around waiting to stall out quite so long and John wouldn't have been shat on.
I quite agree with some of my fellow traders. Let us not give each other a hard time. One trader at the weekend noticed how a porter and stallholder lost their livelihoods and that the fantastic Ben is nowhere to be seen. One trader noticed their takings and the weather. Neither is wrong or right, just a different interpretation of the same experience. We have enough on our plates without beating each other up don't you think. Let's start being nice to each other - please!
Oh God, I can't stop laughing, what a load of absolute nonsense! It's like a real soap opera- who said that, who's done this, what time and how long, bla, bla, bla...
One of the comments above reminded me of the time when Bill was running the market- the amount of bitching and arguing was unbelievable- the moment Bill is gone everyone suddenly changed their mind and Bill is an angel, and Barney is the new target. Keep me amused guys, will check the next episode of the "Market drama" soon.
To you it may be a soap opera. For me it's my livelihood. When Bill was in charge, there was never a need for a site like this. No system is ever perfect, everyone knows that. The point is we should all be working together - by all I mean, traders, management, Hospital, Nelson Bakewell etc etc. Otherwise, other areas and other markets will leave us standing. In fact I'm not so sure they don't already do that. Which is a shame as I am passionate about Greenwich.
I love this blog everyday is better........is like a Latin-American telenovela soap....
WHERE HAS THE WHISTLER GONE?
